Save the Date!
July 11: Ready by 21 Training in Sacramento, CA will center on how communities can use the Forum's "big picture" Ready by 21 approach for youth-centered community planning and partnership development. Participants at the training will learn how to assess their change horsepower, and will leave with specific action steps for their communities. They'll also have the chance to network, learn new tools and strategies and receive a Ready by 21 introductory workbook to take back to their communities. The cost of the training is $195 per person. The Forum is moving forward with its on-the-ground technical assistance efforts. Our most recent field work was in New York where Forum Executive Director Karen Pittman delivered a Ready by 21 presentation for youth bureaus. We've also been busy helping our friends on the other side of the country in Sacramento, California. We recently prepared a study for the Sacramento Mayor's Commission on Youth and are gearing up for a strategic planning event there next month. In other news from California, the William T. Grant Foundation just released a report on lessons learned from the state's after-school expansion. Learn more about all of these efforts in this issue of Forum Flash.

Youth Bureaus Moving Forward with Ready by 21
 In early June, Forum Executive Director Karen Pittman delivered a presentation on Ready by 21 to open part three of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services' Moving Forward series, "Strategic Collaborative Planning." Karen discussed the importance of communities taking a coordinated "big picture" approach to planning, advocacy and policy development in order to improve policies and programs for young people. She also explored how community leaders must understand the connection between youth outcomes, community supports and effective leadership. Learn more about Ready by 21

Sacramento Creates New Office of Youth Development
For the last two years, community leaders on the Mayor's Commission on Sacramento Youth and city staff have been working to address the high crime rate and other youth issues. The Forum provided a comparative study of city-wide governance structures in 5 other cities of similar size. With this information, and after visiting other cities and examining their models for crime prevention, Sacramento created the Office of Youth Development, which will coordinate city efforts for youth.
